Are You Addicted to Sugar?

Are You Addicted to Sugar?

All humans are predisposed to want sugar. Back when humans were hunting and gathering, sweet was a way to know things were safe to eat. Bitter told us to stay away. Even people who say they have a "salt tooth"- it really is a sweet tooth in disguise. They crave things like potato chips, pretzels and crackers. These foods cause the same reaction as sugar in the body because they are refined carbohydrates. When you eat a lot of sugar your body over produces the hormone; insulin. The insulin reacts with the sugar causing blood sugar to drop. When your blood sugar drops, you crave more sugar. This is the cycle of sugar addiction. If you think that you have a problem with sugar, you probably do. Slowly eliminating sugar from your diet. Get used to the taste of the natural sweetness found in nature. This is the best strategy to a sugar free or low sugar diet.

Flax fights “The Blues”

Flax fights “The Blues”

It’s that tired feeling that a good night's rest won’t shake… that listless down in the dumps feeling that you just can’t get rid of. We call it “the blues”, otherwise known as atypical depression, the most common form of depression. Preliminary research suggests that eating a diet rich in flax could slash your risk of ever feeling “down in the dumps”. Follow up studies show that just 2-3 tablespoons of flax daily can help up to 2/3rds of severely depressed women bounce back within eight weeks. Flax, says Udo Erasmus, PhD, has a mood boosting ingredient: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) that is essential for the proper function of brain cells, yet up to 85% of women aren’t getting enough of it

Chia Seed

Chia Seed

This Thanksgiving I made homemade pumpkin pie. It was amazing and I couldn't’ wait to share my success. I have been experimenting with chia seed. I am finding it is a great egg replacement and thickener. I reduced the eggs in my pumpkin mix from 3-1 by adding 4 tbs of chia seed. I also generously sprinkled chia seed on the bottom of the baked crust before putting the mixture on top. This keep the crust crisp by soaking up any moisture  before it went into the crust and made it soggy. I would recommend this for any pie. The texture of my pie was light and airy as well as dramatically reducing the cholesterol. For the full recipe see link to pie recipe

Allergy Help

The Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative Requests Your Help

by ADMIN November 10, 2011

The Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative (CAI) is a network of Canadian families formed to raise greater awareness of the realities Canadians with severe allergies face every day. Their primary goal is to urge Parliamentarians and federal officials to respond to allergy concerns involving public awareness and education, food safety, transportation, and research, with an ultimate goal to reduce the risks of preventable anaphylactic attacks throughout Canada.

The CAI has made progress by working closely with MP Dean Allison in raising awareness with his Parliamentary colleagues. The Niagara West – Glanbrook MP has Motion M-230 in the House of Commons which reads: That in the opinion of the House, anaphylaxis is a serious concern for an increasing number of Canadians and the government should take the appropriate measures necessary to ensure these Canadians are able to maintain a high quality of life.

The CAI submits that governments at all levels can provide leadership on this issue. The federal government can raise greater public understanding, promote responsible safety measures, educate people on the signs of a reaction and how to help a person in need – similar to CPR education, the use of defibrillators, and the public information campaigns for diabetes and stroke awareness. This coordinated government approach will lead to reducing risk and to safer environments for individuals and families living with life-threatening allergies. Our governments have successfully tackled a wide range of health concerns that has made Canada a safer, healthier, happier place to live. The CAI believes that anaphylaxis deserves the same attention.

Please help to get this motion passed by taking these steps:

STEP 1 – Call your MP to arrange a meeting.   The contact information for each Member of Parliament is here. Tell her about anaphylaxis – how it affects your family and ask her to support Dean Allison’s motion M230.

STEP 2 – Bring to the meeting a letter that describes your support for the Motion.   Here’s a draft letter you can use: CAI Draft Letter. Just add your MP’s name, your name, and consider customizing it to tell your story.  Be sure your MP contacts MP Dean Allison to let him know he supports his Motion.

STEP 3 – Mail your letter after the meeting to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Health, and the Transport Minister.

Your support is truly appreciated. To stay informed about CAI’s activities, visit their website by clicking here. You can also find them on Facebook by clicking here.
