Halloween Allergy Alert

Safely Celebrating Halloween with Food Allergies

Being a parent of kids with food allergies is a constant challenge. By now your more then used to adapting things so you child can have the same experiences as the other kids while keeping safe. Holidays are usually the most work, and with Halloween coming up the earlier you can start preparing the easier your life will be.

Halloween is a double whammy because there is usually a party at the school and then trick or treating later on. Here are some helpful tips to help you get through this Halloween without pulling your hair out.

The Party;
  1.  Remind your child's teacher of the hazards with your child’s specific allergies based on the IEP or 504 plan if established.
  2.  Provide the snacks yourself, as I always say, “ if you want something done right, do it yourself”. Its a small price to pay really.
  3. If your really concerned you can ask to attend the party so you can keep an eye on the situation. Make sure to keep your child’s emotional needs in mind and don’t draw unnecessary attention to the allergy.

Trick or Treating;
  1. Keep you child’s allergy medicine on you.
  2. Trade unsafe candy (or the entire bag) for allergen-safe treats or non-food items once your children return home. Safe candy and small party favors can be ordered online. Other non-food ideas include coloring books, pencils, stickers, stuffed animals, and play-dough. Keep in mind that play-dough contains wheat and some crayons contain soy.
  3. Check all ingredients. Remember that treat-sized candy may have different ingredients or be manufactured on different machinery than their full-sized counterparts.
  4. If this sounds like a nightmare, plan an alternate activity, go to the movies or go bowling, as long as you keep in the theme everything will work out.
